Maryport-based Thomas Armstrong revisited one of its own 1970s builds in its home town as the principal contractor for a £1.2 million complete remodel for Derwent and Solway Housing Association.
One of the project’s most instantly noticeable improvements is the retrofit of unique curved trussed rafter roofs with stepped bottom chords to fit over the existing structure.
The three apartment blocks were given the curved roof treatment to complement the sweeping roofline of nearby The Wave Centre and its waterfront location. Each of the three blocks comprises 36 trusses designed and manufactured with the system. Together with the ancillaries which include engineered connectors, the total value of the trussed rafter roof structures was £33,000.
To help tackle this somewhat challenging roof shape, Thomas Armstrong (Timber) enlisted the assistance of ITW Industry’s Alpine technical department. Experienced designer Ed North engineered the custom roof with Alpine’s proprietary software from site measurements supplied by the roof truss manufacturer with additional point loads for the unusual gutter system.
