CE Marking – Less than one year to go
9th August 2024When the UK left the European Union in January 2020, the government intended to end the recognition of CE marking on construction products and to establish the UK Conformity Assured (UKCA) marking system.
Four years later, uncertainty about the CE marking remains and with less than one year to go until the intended deadline of 30 June 2025 to cease recognition of the CE marking in the UK, no progress has been made on the new system. A new government has now added to the uncertainty with Labour yet to publicly engage on the issue.
The UK Government’s stance on construction products is:
“Our intention is to end recognition of the CE mark in GB on 30 June 2025. Current rules, which allow for continued recognition of the CE mark, will remain in place until legislation is laid to end recognition of the CE mark.”
TRA chief executive, Nick Boulton, said:
“The new Labour government has pledged to build 1.5 million homes during this parliament alongside a host of planning reforms aimed at getting Britain building, so questions around certification of UK construction products are more important than ever.”
“The uncertainty regarding the CE mark has caused unnecessary costs to construction product manufacturers such as TRA members in recent years. The sooner the Labour government provides updates or confirms indefinite recognition for CE marking, the better it will be for our industry – and the more prepared the sector will be to help Labour deliver on its goals.”
As of now, no consultation or draft legislation has been published by the government to support this intention to cease recognition of the CE marking in June 2025.
