Mental health support
8th October 2025
10 October marks World Mental Health Awareness Day, an important reminder of the need to prioritise wellbeing in every aspect of life, including the workplace.
According to figures published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), an estimated 1.7 million workers in Great Britain experienced work-related ill health (2023/24 figures), with approximately 50% of cases attributed to stress, depression, or anxiety.
Mental health conditions represent a significant and ongoing public health concern, affecting one in four individuals in the UK at some stage in their lives. Conditions such as anxiety and depression can have a profound effect on an individual’s quality of life, and workplace factors may exacerbate existing issues or contribute to new ones.
Employers have a statutory duty of care to protect the health, safety, and welfare of their workforce, including mental well-being. This obligation encompasses the identification, assessment, and management of mental health risks in the workplace, as well as the provision of appropriate support for employees who may be experiencing psychological difficulties or have pre-existing mental health conditions.
To help members access the right support when they need it, the TRA has highlighted three trusted organisations offering confidential assistance and wellbeing resources – the Construction Industry Helpline, the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, and the Timber Trades Benevolent Society (TTBS).
Construction Industry Helpline
The Trussed Rafter Association (TRA) reminds members that confidential assistance is available through the Construction Industry Helpline. Individuals seeking support can call 0345 605 1956 or download the free helpline app for additional wellbeing resources and guidance.
The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity
The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity offers comprehensive emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing support to workers and families within the construction sector. The TRA fully endorses the Lighthouse Club and its vital mission to improve mental health across the industry.
Members are encouraged to explore the free resources and initiatives available on the Lighthouse Club website, and to foster a proactive culture of mental well-being within their organisations.
Timber Trades Benevolent Society (TTBS)
The TRA is also proud to support the Timber Trades Benevolent Society (TTBS), which provides financial and practical assistance to individuals within the timber industry who are retired, facing hardship, or coping with illness and bereavement.
The Society is sustained through national and regional fundraising efforts, donations from businesses and individuals associated with the timber trade, and generous legacies from former members. Beyond supporting retired industry professionals, the TTBS extends aid to younger workers experiencing ill health or loss within their families.
By raising awareness, encouraging open conversations, and ensuring that support is readily available, the TRA aims to help members create safer, more compassionate workplaces where wellbeing is prioritised alongside productivity.
This World Mental Health Awareness Day, members are encouraged to take a moment to check in with colleagues, access the available resources, and reaffirm their commitment to building a healthier, more supportive industry for everyone.
