TRA supports the next generation at IOC Timber Industry College Hub finale

6th May 2025

The Trussed Rafter Association (TRA) attended the Institute of Carpenters’ (IOC) final Timber Industry College Hub event, hosted by Exeter College and attended by HRH The Duchess of Gloucester, Royal Patron of the IOC.

The royal visit brought national attention to the importance of equipping the next generation with the skills needed for a future in sustainable construction and reinforced the value of timber-based careers within the evolving built environment.

The event marked the culmination of a successful series of College Hub events held across the UK.

Nick Boulton, chief executive of the TRA and head of technical and trade policy at Timber Development UK, was among the keynote speakers, delivering a session on the UK’s raw material supply, sustainability, and the sector’s role in supporting the green agenda.

“As a long-standing advocate of industry and education working closely together, the TRA is proud to support initiatives like the IOC College Hubs,” said Nick Boulton. “Our sector has so much to offer young people, from innovative design and sustainability to meaningful, long-term careers. Events like this one at Exeter College give us a chance to share those opportunities directly with students and help shape the future of our industry.”

Nick was joined by a host of leading figures from across the timber and construction sectors including:

  • Roly Ward (Medite/SmartPly), who discussed MDF and OSB production and technical developments
  • Neil Summers (American Hardwood Export Council – AHEC) shared perspectives on sustainable global forest resources and the international timber industry
  • John Bailey (Benbow Group – NAS) offered personal insights on career opportunities in the shopfitting and interiors industry
  • Ed Suttie (BRE) presented on new developments in the construction industry
  • Samantha Barnes (Historic England), who discussed conservation work and the importance of the heritage sector.

Students benefited from a range of interactive workshops and demonstrations showcasing advanced joinery techniques and modern tools, with contributions from Axminster Tools, Reisser UK, and the IOC’s Mentoring Champions. These hands-on experiences allowed learners to connect directly with potential employers and industry mentors, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world careers.

The presence of HRH The Duchess of Gloucester added a sense of pride and prestige to the day, with students warmly welcoming the opportunity to demonstrate their work and discuss their ambitions with a royal guest.

This milestone event at Exeter College was the final in a ten-part series of Timber Industry College Hub gatherings.

Previous events were held at colleges across the UK, including Lincoln, Leeds, Inverness, and Stratford. Supported by CITB and Timber Development UK, the programme has played a vital role in bringing education and industry closer together.

For the TRA, supporting this initiative aligns closely with its mission to champion training, skills development, and sustainable growth within the structural timber sector. By engaging directly with the next generation, the TRA continues to play an active role in shaping a resilient and future-ready workforce.
